How do on campus programs differ from home study trainings? As with anything else, hypnosis and hypnotherapy schools vary in quality. So does the value of the education they offer and the quality of materials you receive. Here are the facts.

Misconception #1: Hypnotherapy can not be learned through home study.
Fact: Hypnotherapy can be learned through home study trainings which may include the following:

Quality workbooks and materials designed by educational consultants.
Multiple practice hypnotherapy sessions done by you at home.
Professional supervision and feedback on audio taped practice sessions from a trained staff member.
Fax and e-mail support.

Misconception #2: All home study hypnosis programs are alike.
Fact: Hypnosis and hypnotherapy home study training programs and schools vary dramatically.

Misconception #3: Live classroom training is better than home study.
Fact: There are pros and cons for both formats.

Home study allows students to move at their own pace.
In a live class you can ask questions live. In a quality home study training, pertinent questions and answers are answered for you in email format.
In a live class you practice hypnotherapy processes with fellow classmates. In a home study training you practice with "real life" family, friends, co-workers and clients.
In a live class you are given feedback by fellow students and possibly the teacher. In quality home study training you receive professional feedback from a trained staff member via audiotape evaluation. You are also given potentially more objective feedback by "real life" clients.

Misconception #4: Hypnosis can be learned in a weekend followed by home study book reports.
Fact: An introduction to hypnosis can be achieved in a weekend. You can learn facts about hypnosis through books. To learn the practice of hypnosis and hypnotherapy you can purchase quality videos of lectures, discussions and demonstrations as well as practice sessions.

Misconception #5: Receiving a home study hypnosis diploma is better than a certificate.
Fact: Hypnosis and hypnotherapy schools offer vocational training. Therefore most schools issue certificates rather than diplomas. Certificate titles are actually more widely accepted.

Misconception #6: Hypnosis certificate titles relate to standardized hours of home study.
Fact: There are no standardized hours of study for certificate titles. Each school and association designs its own. Academy of Hypnotherapy is an approved school of the American Board of Hypnotherapy, The International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Associatiion and the International Association of Counselors and Therapists.
