For those students who would like to explore only one subject at a time, the following educational courses are available to help them learn the healing arts.
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS & BOOK LIST
1. Introduction to Natural Therapies. In this course, students will learn the basic principles of holistic healing, as well as get a brief introduction into a range of alternative therapies. Texts: Prescription for Nutritional Healing, 2nd or 3rd edition by James & Phyllis Balch (Avery Publishing; NY). 3 credits.
2. Fundamentals of Nutrition. Vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Major nutritional myths; orthomolecular nutrition. Texts: Nutrition Made Simple by Robert Crayhon (Evans Publishing; NY); Life Without Bread by C. Allan and W. Lutz (NTC/McGraw Hill; Ill); Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Balch & Balch. 6 credits.
3. Digestion. How digestion is the key to good health. The digestive process. The importance of stomach acid, enzymes, and probiotics. Digestive disorders and how to heal them naturally. *****************
4. Basic Herbology. Herbal terminology; chemical constituents of herbs; medicinal uses for over 60 herbs; developing formulas for specific needs; herbal contraindications. Texts: The Herb Book by John Lust (Bantam Books; NY); Herb Contraindications & Drug Interactions by Francis Brinker (Eclectic Institute; OR). 6 credits.
5. Nutritional Cardiology: How to maintain a healthy heart and circulatory system. The many causes of heart disease; the saturated fat and cholesterol myths. The thyroid in relation to heart health. Text: *********************; "The Oiling of America" by Sally Fallon & Mary Enig (article reprint supplied by UOHT). 3 credits.
6. Nutrition for Men & Women: Nutritional needs for men and women through the life cycles of adulthood, pregnancy, menopause, and old age. Texts: Super Nutrition for Men by Ann Louise Gittleman (Avery Publishing; NY); Super Nutrition for Women by Gittleman (Bantam Books; NY). 6 credits.
7. Whole Foods Cooking: Traditional food preparation techniques to maximize nutritional content of food and ease its digestion. Course includes all food groups and meal components. Text: Nourishing Traditions (New Trends Publishing; D.C.) by Sally Fallon and Mary Enig; **************TBA. 3 credits.
8. Weight Loss & Diet Disorders: An in-depth look at various weight loss programs with an emphasis on determining a safe, nutritious approach to weight loss. Using amino acids to correct brain and behavioral imbalances and food addictions. Texts: The Schwarzbein Principle by Diana Schwarzbein, MD (HLC Publications; Florida); The Diet Cure by Julia Ross (Penguin Books; USA). 5 credits.
9. World Religions & Spiritual Traditions. This course will introduce the major religions of the world, tribal religions, and neo-pagan traditions, showing the distinctive teachings of each. The course will then progress to demonstrate what all religions have in common and how to implement these universal spiritual principles in a practical way into our lives. Texts: The Religions of the World by Huston Smith (Harper; 1992); Spiritual Traditions (Sterling Publishers; 2000) by Timothy Freke. 6 credits.
10. The Power of Prayer & Meditation. An exploration of the scientific validity of prayer & meditation in helping oneself and others overcome disease and experience the Divine. After exploring in a general sense how prayer can positively affect others, the course will then examine a specific prayer system in action to demonstrate how one can actually "do" prayer correctly for maximum benefit. In keeping with the beliefs of HLM, while the course advocates prayer in one’s life and the lives of others, it does not impose specific beliefs or rules about prayer. Texts: Healing Words by Dr. Larry Dossey (Harper Collins; 1993); Kahuna Healing by Serge Kahili King (Quest Books; 1983). 3 credits.
11. Spiritual Healing Techniques. A thorough exploration of the how and why of spiritual healing. How illness occurs; preparing for and doing spiritual healing for oneself and others. Text: Spiritual Healing by Dr. Stuart Grayson (Simon & Schuster; 1997). 3 credits.
12. Spiritual Perspectives on Death. This course explores the way different traditions confront the realities of death, mortality, and dying. Techniques to help cope with and understand death and dying. Text: In the Light of Death by Timothy Freke, (Barrons Educational Series; 2002). 3 credits.
13. Metaphysical Bible Interpretation. Looking beyond the literal meaning of the Bible to discern the spiritual teaching relevant to one’s life today. The techniques learned in this course are applied to the Bible, but can be easily adapted to study of other sacred scriptures from other faiths. Texts: Wisdom for a Lifetime by Alden Studebaker (Unity House; 1998); The Alternative Gospel by John Baldock (Element Books; 1997). 3 credits.
14. Mystic Christianity. How the teachings specific to Christianity can be applied to one’s life to directly experience the Divine. Basic tools on how to design your own spiritual practices and meditation techniques. Texts: The Inner Core: Exploring the Mystical Christian Experience by Robert Marshall (Unity House; 2001). 3 credits.
15. Spiritual Psychology. An in-depth introduction to the psychological system of Carl Jung. How to view the mind of the person as a spiritual storehouse of wisdom and how to integrate and apply it to one’s life. Text: Boundaries of the Soul by June Singer (Anchor Books; 1972). 4 credits.
16. Vedic Astrology. This course provides an introduction to Vedic Astrology, the divine science of India, according to the Systems Approach to Vedic Astrology as developed and taught by V.K. Choudhry. The course will cover chart construction, horoscope analysis, predictive techniques, and medical astrology. Texts: Astrology for Your Life by D. Hawthorne and V.K. Choudhry (Sun Star Publishing; 1999); Manage Your Health Through Preventive Astral Remedies by V.K. Choudhry (Sagar Publications; 1997). 4 credits.
