What is Low-Light Laser Therapy?
|
Other common name(s): Cold Laser Therapy, low power laser therapy (LPLT), soft laser, biostimulation laser, therapeutic laser, laser acupuncture
|
Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is a painless, sterile, non-invasive and drug-free treatment which is used to treat a variety of pain syndromes, injuries, wounds, fractures, neurological conditions and pathologies. LLLT can be used any time a patient requests or needs a drug-less procedure for the control of pain, when conventional therapies have been ineffective, or when the acceleration of healing from injuries is desired.
The theory for the creation of laser light was proposed by Albert Einstein in 1917, but it was not developed until 1960. It was in the late 1960’s that Professor Endre Mester of Budapest, Hungary first reported his experience using laser light to treat non-healing wounds and ulcers in diabetic patients. Mester’s 70% success rate in treating these wounds lead to the development of the science of what he called “laser biostimulation”.
Around the world, laser therapy is rapidly becoming a medical therapy that can heal wounds and fractures up to 60% faster and also reduce the cost of treatment for many conditions. In the U.K., low level laser therapy has become the treatment of choice for soft tissue “whiplash” injuries and for the treatment of painful post-herpetic neuralgia (shingles pain).
Benefits of LLLT to Users
(1) Relieves acute and chronic pains
(2) Increases the speed, quality and tensile strength of tissue repair
(3) Increases blood supply
(4) Stimulates the immune system
(5) Stimulates nerve function
(6) Develops collagen and muscle tissue
(7) Helps generate new and healthy cells and tissue
(8) Promotes faster wound healing and clot formation
(9) Reduces inflammation
How Does Laser Light Heal?
(1) Supplies energy to the body in the form of non-thermal photons of light.
(2) Transmits through the skin’s layers (the dermis, epidermis and the subcutaneous tissue or tissue fat under the skin) at all wavelengths in the visible range.
(3) Optimizes the immune responses in our blood. This has both anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects.
Healing with the use of light is not new. Light therapy was reported to be effective for many conditions by Hippocrates. With the development of the laser and its special properties, using light as a treatment has gained increasing popularity. This is because we can now use specific wavelengths of light and give accurately measured doses of energy directly to the appropriate treatment site, which was not possible with other light sources.
Low-Level Light Lasers supply energy to the body in the form of non-thermal photons of light. Light is transmitted through the skin’s layers (the dermis, epidermis and the subcutaneous tissue or tissue fat under the skin) at all wavelengths in the visible range. However, light waves in the near infrared ranges penetrate the deepest of all light waves in the visible spectrum. When low level laser light waves penetrate deeply into the skin, they optimize the immune responses of our blood. This has both anti-inflammatory and immunostimulate effects. It is a scientific fact that light transmitted to the blood in this way has positive effects throughout the whole body, supplying vital oxygen and energy to every cell.
Almost everyone knows that vitamin D is called “the sunshine vitamin.” We all know the difference between a suntan and a sunburn. Unlike surgical lasers, low level laser therapy’s do not produce heat or damage tissue. The light from the laser, however, is absorbed by special cellular components or modulates biochemical activity within the body to produce its beneficial effects. In much the same way that plants in photosynthesis use light, humans and animals also have the ability to take advantage of the healthful effects that light has to offer.

Lasers have found much involvement in medicine since the first laser was developed by Theodore H. Maiman in 1960. Most people have heard of lasers used in eye surgery and surgical procedures. These are high-powered "destructive" lasers. But another type of medical laser that has gained attention since the 1970s and has become popular abroad and now in the United States is low level lasers. Unlike surgical lasers, Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is non-destructive, safe, painless, and works very effectively on bio-stimulation.
Low Level Lasers work by stimulating cellular growth and rejuvenation to the applied area. There are four distinct effects associated with low level laser therapy:
1.
Growth factor response within cells and tissues due to increased ATP and protein synthesis
2.
Pain relief as a result of increased endorphin and serotonin release
3.
Increased lymphatic activity and strengthening of immune system response
4.
Stimulation of acupuncture points
These four effects are a result of amplified and synchronized infrared light (laser beam) at a certain wavelength (600-1000nm) that triggers a cellular and biochemical process, including ATP and collagen production and increased blood flow to the affected area. The penetration of living tissue has been proven to be most effective at this 600-1000 nanometer range (the higher the wavelength of a laser, the deeper the penetration into the tissue). Products such as our SoftLaser™ operate at wavelengths of 635-675 nanometers, making it an excellent laser for superficial stimulation (skin) and regeneration without effecting deeper tissue.
Low Level Laser therapy is widely used in Spain, the United Kingdom, Asia, Australia and South America. Even our Northern neighbor Canada has largely accepted the therapy as a viable option for a number of conditions. Unfortunately, low-level lasers are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, although many efforts and studies are being held to support the safety and effectiveness of low level laser therapy.
Painless Therapy for the entire family.

What is a Cold Laser Therapy?
Note, the term “Cold Laser” is used by many to differentiate it from the surgical lasers(hot). Its correct name is Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT, Class III). In this page I will simply refer to it as Cold Laser.
Cold Laser’s light is compressed light of a wavelength (Visible and/or Infrared light) part of ElectroMagnetic spectrum. It is different from natural light in that it is one precise color; it is coherent (it travels in a straight line), monochromatic (a single wavelength) and polarized (it concentrates its beam in a defined location or spot). These properties allow laser light in the cold (red) spectrum to penetrate the surface of the skin with no heating effect, no damage to the skin and no known side effects..
Why haven’t you heard about Therapeutic Laser?
a. FDA approved 2 yrs ago class III lasers. (Used by MD’s & Therapists in Europe since 1985)
b. Can’t bill the Insurance Co. in US. (It’s billable in Europe)
c. Lack of Tech. training in this country. (Few Med. Practitioners know what to look for in a laser and end up buying lasers that have limited therapeutic effect) Please call us before you buy and we can guide you to buy the proper laser systems that are in FDA i.r.b.
What can I expect during a treatment?
You will be asked to remove your clothing from the area to be treated. The laser light is able to penetrate deeper on bare skin. You will also be given a pair of protective eye goggles to wear during treatment. Then simply get comfortable and relax during your treatment.
What will I feel during the treatment?
When the Laser is administered, all you will feel is the laser probe coming in contact with your skin. There is no pain or any kind of discomfort.
How does it work (heal)?
The laser causes photochemical reactions in the cells and increases production of cellular metabolism (ATP). This expedites cell repair & enhances cell regeneration and furthermore, stimulates immune, lymphatic and vascular systems. The Influences are: one cell- -> many cells- -> systemic). The net result as shown in clinical studies is a reduction in pain, inflammation, edema and an overall reduction in healing time.
How does the laser reduces pain & inflammation?
1. Dampening pain pathways to the brain
2. Increasing natural opiate painkillers
3. Stimulating the Sodium/Potassium pump
4. Restoring resonant energy in the cell
5. Decreasing chemical inflammatory mediators
How much will treatment(s) cost?
• Initial Consultation and Treatment (30 minutes to 1 hour) 295.00
• All subsequent visits (30 – 45 min.) 100.0

Most pain related problems can be treated, plus other conditions. As reported in the Science Channel (Ultimate Guide) : “ Billy Schwer lost bid for the championship (boxing). His skin let him down (was cut above both eye brows). Billy has tried to overcome his skin lack of collagen, by enriching his diet with collagen building substance, and by undergoing Laser treatment by making his skin stronger. It appears to be working; Billy has not been cut in the last four fights.”
What if I am currently under a physician care (MD) ?
Laser Therapy is complementary to western medicine. If you are under a Medical Doctor’s (MD) care, you should continue for as long as your MD deems it necessary, and continue to take all prescribed medication.

Laser Therapy…The Healing Energy and Power of Light !
Light Therapy
Low Light Level Laser Therapy has been used for nearly 4 decades world wide. It is safe non-invasive and is proving to be one of the most effective holistic ways of wound healing, acupuncture theory, pain management, addiction therapy, weight management, smoking cessation, postoperative pain and much more.
A class 3b laser can be used on acupuncture points along with auricular therapy points to help assist with balance and detoxification of the body to speed healing and to eliminate unwanted habits.
Low Level Laser Therapy works in the same theory as acupuncture points without the use of invasive needles. Low Level lasers are used to stimulate the acu-points with a safe non-invasive pulsed laser light instead of needles. This works with the meridians in the body bringing balance to organs that may not be functioning at optimal levels. The Low Level Laser helps to produce an endorphin release working with the natural opiods in our system giving you a wonderful feeling of well-being. This endorphin release can last for up to several days. The laser helps speed up your metabolism by working at the same wavelength as the mitochondria. Mitochondria are the powerhouse of each cell, converting energy into its usable form and allowing the maintenance of normal body function and metabolism.
LASER THERAPY & TREATMENTS
About Laser Therapy
• How Does Laser Therapy Work?
During the last three decades, low-level (non-surgical) lasers have been developed as an effective tool for the treatment of addictions, injuries, pain, wound healing, and many other conditions, and is now gaining widespread international acceptance. Low-level laser therapy (laser acupuncture) can be used as a treatment modality on its own or combined with other therapies in a variety of situations to provide enhanced treatment results.
Invisible meridians, which run over the surface of the body and head, are connected to nerve pathways, which project from the skin surface and underlying muscles. When a low-level laser is used to stimulate specific reflex points (acupuncture points) on the body, the stimulation of these reflex points on the skin surface and underlying muscles activates the nerve pathways that travel from the nerves to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the brain. These altered neurological reflexes then transmit messages to higher nervous centers.
When tissue is irradiated with laser light, certain cell functions are stimulated, especially when the cells in question have an impaired function. All irradiation, even of healthy tissue, activates a variety of processes, leading to the production of oxygen. Small amounts of oxygen build up when the tissue is irradiated with laser light. This laser light influences the oxidative process by increasing cell metabolism, collagen synthesis, action of nerve cells, and stimulation of the formation of DNA. This laser light also improves blood circulation in the tissue, has local effects on the immune system, and anti-inflammatory and pain relieving effects. As well, cells in the tissue subjected to the light produce substances that then spread and circulate in blood vessels and the lymphatic system such as transmitter signal substances like endorphins and serotonin, which have a direct effect on the nerves.
The use of laser therapy is safe, painless, drug free and highly effective. After 30 years of use, there are no known side effects associated with laser therapy. The benefits of laser therapy are well documented and over 2500 research reports have been published world-wide. Also, studies have shown that up to 80% of people who have received laser therapy have responded positively.
Laser Therapy Treatments
The success of the treatments increases with the addtition of guided imagery, hypnosis and the exercise of will power and the commitment to making positive lifestyle changes.
NOTE: We do not treat individuals who are pregnant, have pacemakers, have had organ transplants, taking immunosuppressant drugs or are receiving radiation or chemotherapy treatments.
• Smoking Cessation
A low-level laser is used to stimulate specific reflex points on the ears, face, and hands, which releases the body’s own natural endorphins, which have a calming effect on the central nervous system. This release of endorphins also replaces the physical dependency on nicotine and alleviates the cravings, anxiety and other withdrawal symptoms associated with quitting smoking.
A pencil sized probe is used on specific reflex points for sixty seconds and creates a warm tingling sensation, which is due to increased blood circulation. Each treatment takes about one hour and there is no discomfort to the client during of after the treatment. As a precaution, clients wear special protective glasses during the treatment to protect their eyes from the laser light. The effects can last from six to eight weeks after the treatment. Laser therapy is also the only smoking cessation treatment that helps control weight gain and helps to reduce stress associated with quitting smoking.
A redo and three boosters are included with the initial treatment. In case you slip, the redo is good up to a month after your initial treatment and the boosters are good up to three months after the initial treatment provided you have not smoked. The boosters are recommended at three days, three weeks and three months.
• Weight Loss
A low-level laser is used to stimulate specific reflex points on the ears, face, hands and feet to accelerate one’s own metabolism, suppress the appetite and cravings for certain foods. This happens as a result of the body releasing its own natural endorphins and serotonin. The effects last up to four weeks. The laser therapy treatments combined with a proper diet and regular exercise can aid in weight loss. If you want to lose six to eight pounds, one treatment may be all that is needed.
During your initial treatment, you will be provided with nutritional guidance and information on detoxification to help you reach your goals. If you want to lose more than six to eight pounds, boosters are recommended about every four weeks after the initial treatment until your ideal weight is achieved.
• Pain Relief
A low-level laser is used to stimulate specific reflex points on the external ear to help manage acute and chronic pain. Stimulation of corresponding body points on the external surface of the ear sends messages to the brain which helps alleviate abnormal changes in the body tissue, caused by disease in other parts of the body. The number of laser therapy treatments needed is dependent upon the type of pain being treated. Even after only one treatment, many clients have noticed a reduction in the amount of pain they were experiencing.
A positive aspect of the laser therapy treatment is that pain can be alleviated as early as during the treatment session itself. Clients may experience increased pain the day after the treatment, which is normal after the treatment of common complaints. It occurs because an injury is made acute when the process of healing starts, which is a short-term and positive sign.
Treatment intervals differ depending on whether the condition is chronic or acute, and also whether there is just a need to treat pain or achieve a more long-term effect. Depending on the condition(s) being treated and for the most effective results, the laser therapy treatments are usually scheduled every other day or every third day for the first couple of weeks and then once a week for a few weeks. The laser therapy treatments have been shown to be cumulative (the dose from one treatment lasts some time, and what remains of the dose is added to the dose at the next treatment). If the treatments are too close together the effectiveness of the laser therapy treatments can be suppressed. For example, for sports injuries, it takes a little more than half the ordinary healing time if the healing process is stimulated with laser therapy. The injured area however, must be allowed to rest and training to be resumed gradually. Treatment should not be interrupted just because the pain is gone.

Low Level Laser Therapy is a form of phototherapy or light therapy. This involves the application of low power light (red and near infrared light) to injuries or wounds to improve soft tissue healing and relieve both acute and chronic pain. It is also known as cold laser, soft laser or low intensity laser. Low level laser therapy aims to biostimulate. Because of the low power nature of low level laser therapy the effects are biochemical and not thermal and cannot cause heating and thereby damage to living tissue. The therapy is precise and accurate; and offers safe and effective treatment for a wide variety of conditions.
The word "laser" is an acronym for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Lasers do NOT emit X-RAYS and do NOT present the dangers of X-RAYS. The theory was first described by Albert Einstein (1879-1955) who paved the way for the development of the therapeutic laser.

How does Laser relate to Acupuncture?
|
Low-Light laser is a a new way of using an age-old
Chinese acupuncture treatment method
|
|
to restore healthy tissue, relieve pain and rejuvenate muscles without the invasiveness of the needles used in traditional acupunture.
Therapeutic Low Level Lasers
are Pain free, Non-invasive
Cellular Healing Enhancement
Laser Therapy is the application of Coherent Laser Light over skin, glands, organs and bones used to stimulate healing within the tissue. Low-level Lasers do not heat, or cut the tissues and are called “cold-lasers or soft lasers.”
|
|
|
Acupuncture is the chinese medical art of inserting fine needles into predetermined points of the body to produce physiological changes and healing. As a treatment system, acupunctures is as effective as, or in some cases more effective than western medicine. Until recently, the modes of action was not fully understood and could only be explained in terms of ancient, non-scientific, conceptual terms.
|
|
Now that acupuncture's efficacy can be explained in scientific terms, it may be described as a form of applied neuro-physiology. With understanding of neuro-physiological responses in the body system, a better, non-invasive treatment can be instituted for pain-free, sterile, safe and effective results.
|
|
When an acupuncture point is stimulated, it has increased electrical conductivity. By stimulating acupuncture points in a given combination, the brain can be stimulated to release various neuro-chemicals which cause the body to heal. This neuro-stimulation re-opens healing channels the body masks in response to prolonged pain that, without neuro-stimulation, generally leads to chronic conditions
